Universal Pictures announced Friday that they will release a remake of Al Pacino's classic crime tale "Scarface" on August 10, 2018.
The studio has Joel and Ethan Coen attached to the project to polish the script, with original producer Martin Bregman returning in the same role. The plot will follow the basic framework of Pacino's film, but will change it from a Cuban immigrant in Miami to a Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles. Antoine Fuqua was originally brought on to direct the film, but had to back out due to prior obligations. Universal has yet to announce a replacement.
'Scarface' (1932)
Based on Armitage Trail’s novel of the same name, “Scarface” is directed by Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson. Starring Paul Muni, Ann Dvorak, Osgood Perkins, Karen Morley, George Raft and Boris Karloff the film is about the drastic rise and fall of an ambitious gangster amidst gang warfare within the city. The film launched the acting career of George Raft.
'Scarface' (1983)
Brian De Palma’s remake starred Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michelle Pfeiffer. Set in the 1980s, the film is about a Cuban refugee Tony Montana (Al Pacino), his drastic rise as a drug lord and his fall due to greed. Al Pacino said Tony Montana was one of the favorite characters he has ever played.
'Death Takes a Holiday' (1934)
Based on Alberto Casella’s play, the film is a story about Death and its short stint among mortals, when it decides to take human form. Death falls in love with a beautiful woman named Grazia and has to decide whether to continue his happiness with her or sacrifice her to have a normal life like other mortals.
'Meet Joe Black' (1998)
Loosely based on “Death Takes a Holiday,” Martin Brest’s “Meet Joe Black” starred Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Claire Forlani, Jake Weber, Marcia Gay Harden and Jeffrey Tambor. After “Legends of the Fall” (1994), this was the second collaboration between Pitt and Hopkins.
'Father of the Bride' (1950)
Based on a novel of the same name by Edward Streeter, the film portrays a father’s emotional and financial stress during the wedding of her daughter. The film starred Spencer Tracy as the father Stanley Banks, Elizabeth Taylor as his daughter Kay and Joan Bennett as Kay’s mother Ellie. The Vincente Minnelli film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and Spencer Tracy for Best Actor.
'Father of the Bride' (1991)
Starring Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams and George Newbern, this remake was directed by Charles Shyer. Tom Irish played Ben Banks in both films after making made his acting debut in the 1950 version. After the immense success of the film, a sequel titled “Father of the Bride Part II” was released in 1995.
